Packing and Equipment

Despite Mount Kenya being on the equator in Africa, it can get very cold. In the early hours of the morning the temperature can get to about -4 degrees Celsius at about 4000 meters and as high as 18 degrees Celsius during the day.

So packing the right equipment is very important.

We Provide a porter that will carry your main bag up the mountain for you so please pack the necessary equipment that we have suggested in the below packing list.

Below is a gear list showing all the necessary equipment required for this trip.
All clothing should be quick-drying: cotton clothing should be avoided.
It is important to have all items on the gear list for personal safety in a mountain environment.
Your personal equipment to be carried by the porters must not weigh more than 15 kgs.

NOTE: We include a 4 season sleeping bag, sleeping bag liner and mattress on our Luxury and VIP packages

RAIN GEAR
1 x Gore-Tex Jacket or equivalent
1 x Gore-Tex waterproof pants or equivalent

CLOTHING
1 x down jacket
1 x warm fleece top (add a second if you don’t have a down jacket)
1 x hiking trousers
3 x breathable t-shirts
1 x base layer top (breathable underlayer)
1 x base layer bottoms (breathable long johns)
5 x hiking socks (warm)
1 x warm hat (balaclava, beanie)
1 x warm insulate gloves

FOOTWEAR
1 x waterproof hiking boots (preferable Gore-Tex)
1 x technical alpine climbing shoes or rock climbing shoes

ACCESSORIES
1 x 50 to 70 liter ruck sack
1 x dry bag liner to keep your personal items dry
1 x daypack (20-40 liters) If using a porter
1 x head torch (Essential)
1 x spare batteries
1 x sun hat
1 x sunglasses (Essential)
1 x camera and spare batteries
1 x water bottle or hydration system with a total carrying capacity of 2 liters
1 x umbrella (good to have if rain jacket is 100%)
2 x telescopic trekking poles (optional)
1 x pair gaiters (available on request)

Day Pack

 

As mentioned in the above list, you will need a day pack that you can carry on a daily basis where you could keep your personal belongings and things that you may need close at hand.

Please see the following list and Video clip below for what we recommend carrying in you day pack:

-Waterproof jacket and trousers

-Warm light weight fleece top

-Sun block, sun hat and lip salve

-Water, this could be carried in either a water bottle of a hydration pack. This needs to carry 2 liters

-Camera

-Head Torch, just in case you arrive in camp late.

-Warm hat
