Climb Mount Kenya with Expert Guides | African Ascents

Mount Kenya is one of Africa’s great mountain wildernesses, yet most trekkers experience only a small part of it. At African Ascents, we believe there is a different way to explore this remarkable mountain—one that prioritises solitude, authenticity and a deeper connection with the landscape.

Established in 2012, African Ascents has spent the past 14 years crafting exceptional Mount Kenya trekking and climbing experiences. We are not a high-volume operator. We deliberately focus on quality over quantity, ensuring that every client receives personalised attention, expert guidance and an experience that feels genuinely unique.

Private Mount Kenya Expeditions | African Ascents Preferred Routes

Our speciality lies in guiding trekkers away from the busy tourist corridors and into the quieter, wilder corners of the mountain. Rather than following the well-trodden Sirimon route used by the majority of visitors, our preferred itineraries explore the spectacular Chogoria and Timau routes, descending via Sirimon or Naro Moru. These routes showcase the mountain at its finest: dramatic valleys, remote alpine lakes, giant groundsel forests and vast open landscapes where encounters with other groups are often few and far between.

Over the years, we have invested considerable effort into developing a network of private camps in carefully selected locations. These camps are established with environmental responsibility at the forefront, avoiding sensitive habitats while offering our guests exceptional scenery, tranquility and privacy. The result is an experience that feels exclusive without compromising our commitment to protecting the mountain we call home.

For those seeking something even more adventurous, we offer journeys into some of Mount Kenya’s lesser-known and most beautiful regions. Hidden gems such as Carr’s Lakes, the Enchanted Lake and Fox Tarn reveal a side of the mountain that few visitors ever see. Remote camps tucked amongst towering giant groundsels and secluded valleys provide a sense of discovery that is increasingly rare in modern trekking.

Point Lenana – 4,985m ASL

Every Mount Kenya guided tour that we operate is designed around reaching Point Lenana, the mountain’s third-highest summit at 4,985 metres above sea level. Whether you dream of standing on the summit at sunrise or prefer a later ascent to avoid the crowds, we tailor the experience to suit your goals. For experienced climbers seeking a greater challenge, we also offer technical alpine ascents of Nelion (5,188m) and Batian (5,199m), the mountain’s two highest peaks. For those who don’t wish to summit Lenana, we have an alternative option that circumnavigates Lake Michaelson and Lake Ellis, the Lake Michaelson Trek.
