The Fit for Mt Kenya Challenge is back!
In January 2015 African Ascents launched its first ‘Fit for Mt Kenya’ Challenge for the Capital Club East Africa.
The Challenge is made up of 3 stages:
Fitness
Rock Climbing
A Technical Alpine Ascent of Nelion (5,188m) on Mt Kenya via the South East Ridge.
In January 2015 we had 3 members from The Capital Club who signed their lives away and began training with us - Jeenal Shah, Kirat Bharbara and Johan Borgstam.
They completed 8 hours of sessions at an indoor rock climbing facility (Blue Sky) in Nairobi, a weekend climbing outside on rock at Hells Gate National Park, as well as 2 months of fitness training in the gym.
On the 27th of February the group began their 6 day expedition up Mt Kenya with superb weather. After some glacial training on the mountain they set off for the summit of Nelion on the 4th of March, led by guides Julian Wright and Tom Gregory. It was a fantastic summit attempt, with Jeenal and Kirat reaching Baillie’s Bivvie and Johan Borgstam, the Swedish Ambassador to Kenya, successfully reaching the summit of Nelion.
