If you would like to climb a route that is seldom used, remote and give you a real sense of an Afro-montane forest, then this is definitely the route for you.

DAY 1 GATHIURU FOREST STATION TO GIANT BAMBOO CAMP (2,600 m)

Trekking time: 4 hours.

You will meet the African Ascents team and take the Burgeret track up the mountain. With porter support, you will trek from just above Gathiuru Forest Station to our first camp at about 2,600 meters. It is a long but thrilling walk through dense forest and towering bamboo to Giant Bamboo camp. In the forest there are many species of brightly coloured birds such as the Hartlaub’s Turaco and the Malachite sunbird and different species of monkeys.

DAY 2 GIANT BAMBOO CAMP TO HIGHLAND CASTLE (3,700 m)

Trekking time: 5-6 Hours

The bamboo gives way to enormous Podocarpus and Ceders forest and as we climb higher we pass through the Hagenia zone also known as the rosewood zone (generally found at 2850-3000m). We spend the night just above the Giant Heath zone at the "Highland Castle" bluffs.

DAY 3 HIGHLAND CASTLE TO KAMI HUT (4,600m) Trekking

Trekking Time: 6 hours

Trek to the base of the high peaks then take summit circuit trail in the clockwise direction, with amazing views of the jagged volcanic peaks and glaciers. We will descend a moraine ridge and traverse again to reach Kami Tarn in time for a late lunch. After lunch, there will be time to investigate the north face route to Batian or simply enjoy the views.

DAY 4 KAMI HUT TO POINT LENANA (4,985 m) TO OLD MOSES

Trekking Time: 8 hours

An early departure at 5.30am for a sunrise summit is the best way to experience this climb to point Lenana, and enjoy the expansive views of the mountainside, valleys and country beyond - even the summit of Kilimanjaro - whilst sipping a nice warm drink. The descent takes you down the Northern side along the Sirimon route where you will have brunch in the Mackinders Valley. Then it’s a final walk down to Old Mozes camp for collection. You will be back in the Nanyuki area by 3pm for a late lunch at Nanyuki airstrip.
